Exploring Portraits

10.00am to 12.00pm
Learn and practice how to paint the human face using acrylics whilst improving your
ability to capture likeness and proportion. We will use charcoal to practice representing three dimensionality and work on colour mixing with acrylic paint to match skin tones, hair and facial features.
Learning Goals: (by the end of the course you will be able to…)
- Use charcoal to represent three-dimensionality in a portrait using subtractive shading
- Use acrylic paints to paint a monochromatic portrait showing three-dimensionality and likeness
- Mix and accurately colour match skin tones, facial features and hair colour using acrylic paint
- Feel more confident and relaxed in your portraiture work through continued exercises and practice using charcoal and acrylic paint
Who is this course for: People who would love to learn how to improve their portrait work or progress from pencil to paint in a supportive and encouraging environment
Previous knowledge or experience: A little experience of drawing or painting (particularly portraits) is useful, but beginners are very welcome as we will build knowledge as we go
How will I learn: You will learn techniques to help you draw black and white portraits in charcoal and acrylic, how to mix colour in acrylic and how to paint a full portrait in acrylic.
How will I be assessed: You will learn from watching the tutor demonstrate techniques then having a go yourself

If a learner decides to withdraw from a course before a course begins, the following charges should be made:
- 5 working days or more before course starts a full refund will be issued
- No refunds will normally be made if a learner withdraws from a course less than 4 working days before the start of the course
Attendance is expected at each session to ensure that you get the most out of your learning experience and to minimise disruption for other learners. Please advise the venue/tutor of any absence you may have.
