This short course follows on from levels 1 and 2  looking deeper into the Makaton language programme for carers focusing on using Makaton in everyday situations.

  • Demonstrate 12 everyday phrases in Makaton signs and symbols signs and symbols from Stages 1–8 and Additional Vocabulary
  • Apply use of Makaton flexibly to communicate at simple, key word and more complex levels according to need
  • Identifying techniques that make information accessible and meaningful to core users
  • Demonstrate confidence in using signs and symbols accurately and fluently, use techniques for placement, directionality and movement
  • Understand the components of signs and how to analyse them

About the Course: Makaton is a unique language programme that uses symbols, signs and speech to enable people to communicate. It supports the development of essential communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall and organisation of language and expression. Using Makaton signs and symbols can support people who have little or no speech to communicate their basic needs and wants.

Who is this course for: Those that have completed levels 1 and 2. Parents and unpaid carers who wish to communicate with a Makaton user or would like to introduce Makaton within the home

Previous Knowledge or Experience: Completion of Level 1 and 2 (beginners and follow up)

How will I learn: In a group of up to 12 learners. Through demonstration and fun activities

How will I be assessed: Informal assessment by the tutor

The £37.80 materials fee will provide you with two workshop manuals, which include the signs and symbols that you have learned.
