Sewing for Happiness

Online course

Wednesday 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th November and 4th December 2024

6.30pm to 8.30pm

This course will help you develop your sewing skills through a mixture of practice, discussion, and demonstration within a supportive, friendly online classroom environment where you will connect and learn. Each week you will build skills to enable you to use a dressmaking pattern for future projects: understanding the pattern instructions and choosing which size to use, sewing samples to explain the technical jargon for woven and stretch fabric, create a sample for a lapped zip, sew a blind hem and buttonhole. These skills introduce you to different sewing techniques and gain confidence in using your sewing machine, whilst understanding the sewing jargon and techniques required for dressmaking.

Learning Goals: (by the end of the course you will be able to…)

  • List 4 new sewing terms required to sew/construct an item of your choice and define
  • Classify stitches to sew woven and stretch fabrics and create samples of at least 3 types of seams
  • Identify and demonstrate 3 skills required for sewing an individual project (e.g., seam neatening, sewing a dart, sewing a buttonhole).
  • Name 2 of the HCC 5 ways to wellbeing displayed during the course.

About the course: The process of being creative can bring numerous health benefits and general feelings of wellbeing. Research shows that taking up Sewing can help, amongst other things depression, anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, insomnia and raising levels of happiness.
