Through a combination of discussion, modelling and hands-on activities, the course will help families understand key expectations of school life and enhance children’s readiness for learning, independence and wellbeing. To help everyone get the most out of the course, please note that it focuses on general strategies for supporting children’s school readiness, rather than personalised guidance around complex family circumstances, specialist SEND processes, or individual mental health needs. If you feel you may need more tailored support, we can help signpost you to the right services. We may also contact you before the course to ensure it’s a good fit for your needs.

Learning Goals:

Describe at least two ways that sharing a book with my child helps their school readiness (e.g. their language development or attention skills).

Share at least one turn-taking activity with my child and explain how this supports their social skills.

Create an opportunity for my child to try a new or challenging activity to help them build their resilience.

Make regular opportunities for my child to develop their coordination using large and small movements (fine and gross motor skills).

Put in place strategies that help my child to practise daily self-care routines (e.g. toileting, dressing, using cutlery).

About the course: This course supports parents and carers in preparing their child for starting school within the next year.
