The Archaeology of Seacoasts & Seafaring Part 2

Gosport Discovery Centre

Saturday 9th March 2024

10.00am to 1.00pm

To present and then discuss evidence for how the Romans, Saxons and later Vikings responded to the challenges present by seacoasts and the sea itself. To examine the development and use of sea craft in the later Viking period.

  • Assess the role of the Roman ‘Saxon Shore Forts’ along the south coast of England
  • Analyse the extent to which the Saxon peoples and later Vikings used the sea as a highway
  • Trace the continued use of sea-going boats to a peak period in the Viking era

About the course: A tutor presentation and a range of material will be used to enable and guide students to make their own findings on the strategic location of the Saxon Shore Forts for example. Also aspects of evidence, both direct and indirect, will be used to look at how sea going boats developed in the post Roman period (including a brief look at experimental archaeology)

Who is this course for: Anyone with an interest in the past and how it can be investigated

Previous knowledge or experience: No previous knowledge is required, but an interest in past lives helps

What shall I bring: Bring notebooks, pencils, pens, a clear ruler and plenty of enthusiasm!
