The ukulele is one of the easiest instruments to learn to play. It is also one of the most fun instruments on the planet, drawing people together to enjoy themselves, make friends and sing songs. On this friendly and inclusive course, you will learn the basics of ukulele playing and group performance.

  • Hold the ukulele correctly
  • Learn chords and strum in time to a beat, including 4/4 time, 3/4 time and the ‘ghost strum’
  • Perform at least four chord sequences in time to a beat
  • Strum along to simple songs in a range of styles, including pop, folk, rock & roll and reggae
  • Play three or more strumming patterns, including using up and down strokes
  • Describe how playing a musical instrument can improve your mental health

About the course: Research suggests that music can stimulate the body’s natural feel-good chemicals.  It can help energise our mood and even help us work through problems and provide an outlet for us to take control of our feelings.  Music can help promote wellness, manage stress, express feelings, enhance your memory and even improve communication

Who is this course for: Anyone wanting to learn the ukulele and improve their mental health by relaxing and learning to play a musical instrument

Previous knowledge or experience: Ability to use individual fingers and grip. Knowing how to tune the ukulele would be recommended and very useful but help will be given in the form of a short 1-2-1 session and video lesson made available upon booking

How will I learn: Through tutor demonstration, group discussions and playing the ukulele

How will I be assessed: Tutor observation, playing the ukulele

What shall I bring: A ukulele if you have one, or you are able to hire a ukulele for a refundable deposit of £5. Please mention this at the time of booking

Next steps: This could lead to the Learning in Libraries Ukulele for Improvers or Fingerpicking on the Ukulele courses, alternatively to membership of a local club.  The chord fingerings of the ukulele are like those used on the guitar but much easier to manage, so this course could also be seen as a step towards playing the guitar

Attendance is expected at each session to ensure that you get the most out of your learning experience and to minimise disruption for other learners. Please advise the venue/tutor of any absence you may have.

You will be contacted by a member of the learning in Libraries team prior to the course. We are unable to process your booking without a phone number.
