Understanding Children's Behaviour and Supporting their Social and Emotional Development is an updated, two-part course supporting you to analyse and identify communicative function and underlying factors of a child’s behaviour. There will be a focus on the adult role in responding to and shaping behaviour, through proactive strategies, including creating behaviour plans.

Delegates must attend both sessions.

Sessions can be purchased separately, for in-house Understanding Behaviour training

Session one - Understanding Children's Behaviour: Supporting their Social and Emotional Development

This session looks at the reasons why a child may behave in a particular way. By beginning to explore underlying factors that may be impacting on the child, the focus of this training then looks at the need tailored support and how you can begin to identify new skills the child may need to learn.

By the end of this session, you will be able to:

  • Explain what is meant by the term 'social and emotional' development
  • Explain the impact of self-esteem and resilience on behaviour
  • Identify the communicative function of behaviour
  • Use an appropriate tool to analyse children's behaviour

Session two - Understanding Children's Behaviour: Supporting their Social and Emotional Development

This session focuses on how to respond to and support a child’s social emotional and mental health and understand the importance of the adult role in shaping behaviour. It will highlight proactive strategies and teaching of new skills through a behaviour plan as part of a positive approach to develop personal social and emotional development.

By the end of this training, you will

  • Understand the importance of the adult role in supporting a child's behaviour
  • Understand and be able to apply proactive strategies in your setting.
  • Know when and how to respond/react to a child's behaviour

Be able to create a behaviour plan to support a child's personal, social, and emotional development
