Creative Writing: Getting Started With Your Romance Novel

This two-part workshop will guide you through the process of starting your romance novel, from initial plotting to developing compelling characters.

Learning Goals:

  • Write a high-level outline of your story, from ‘Once upon a time’ to ‘Happy ever after'
  • Discuss internal and external conflict and how resolution moves your story along
  • List 3 different ways that creative writing can benefit your wellbeing
  • Develop at least one of your main characters and their character arc
  • List 3 next steps to help you continue your writing

About the course: This workshop is designed to be a welcoming and creative space for all levels, giving you the tools and inspiration to start or enhance your romance novel.

Who is this course for: No matter where you are in your writing journey—whether you’re just starting out with an idea, or you’ve been writing for years—this course will guide you from the very beginning. We’ll take your idea or series of ideas and help you shape them into a solid outline, then dive into developing characters that will bring your story to life.

Previous knowledge or experience: None Required

How will I learn: Discussion, demonstration, writing exercises, and Q&A

How will I be assessed: Through group discussion and review of your story outline and main character development

What shall I bring: Paper and pen for note-taking, or if preferred, a laptop or tablet for working electronically

Next steps: This course will equip you with the tools to outline your story and develop your main and secondary characters, enabling you to move on to more detailed writing workshops in the future
