Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale (ECERS3/ITERS3/MOVERS/SSTEW)

Do you want to improve your learning environment? Is improving role of the adult on your development plan? Do you need a tool to help with self-assessment? The Environment Rating Scales training will cover all of this and more!

The eLearning course has three options you can choose from. Use the drop down menu to select one of the following options:

  • ECERS3 (Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale - Third Edition). This scale is designed for use with one classroom or one group at a time, for children aged 3 through to 5 years of age. If at least 75% of the children in the group are at least three years of age, use this scale. This audit tool supports you in evaluating the quality of practice and provision focussing on the physical environment including children’s health and safety; children’s relationships and interactions with one another and with significant adults; and the quality of teaching in all areas of learning and development.
  • ITERS 3 (Infant and Toddler Environmental Rating Scale –Third Edition) This scale applies to classrooms or groups of children in which the majority of children are younger than 36 months (From birth to age 3 years). This audit tool supports you to evaluate practice and provision for babies, toddlers and two year olds focussing on the quality of practice and provision. It helps you to evaluate the physical environment including children’s health and safety; care routines; the relationships between significant adults and children; warm and caring interactions; and the quality of teaching in all areas of learning and development particularly the prime areas.
  • MOVERS (Movement Environment Rating Scale). This scale is designed for use in provision for children age 2 years to 6 years old.
  • SSTEW (Sustained Shared Thinking and Emotional Wellbeing Scale ). This e-learning training, created by the Early Years Advisory Team, focuses on how to use the Sustained Shared Thinking and Emotional Wellbeing (SSTEW) environment rating scale to best support children in your setting. This self-guided module is designed to assess the educational practices that support the development of focused thinking, problem solving and imagination, alongside emotional wellbeing and self-regulation. Delegates will learn how to use the SSTEW as a tool to gain a deeper understanding of areas of practice and as a self-evaluative tool to enable continuous quality improvement within the setting, with all staff taking part.

Each of these Environment Rating Scales can be used not only to assess the quality of the environment, but can also help you to identify areas of need for professional development. It can be used to drive change and improve practice alongside a robust professional development programme. This can be supported by the broad range of training courses and opportunities provided by HEYTC.

These courses have been split into pre-recorded manageable modules for you to work through at a pace and time that suits you.
