Guitar for Beginners

The guitar is a lovely instrument to learn to play and is also great fun. The guitar draws
people together to enjoy themselves, make friends and sing songs. On this friendly and inclusive course, you will learn the basics of guitar playing and group performance.
Learning Goals:
- Hold the guitar correctly
- Learn simple chords and strum in time to a beat, including 4/4time, ¾ time
- Strum along to simple songs in a range of styles, including pop and folk
- Learn how to tune your guitar correctly
- Describe how playing a musical instrument can improve your mental health
Who is this course for: Research suggests that music can stimulate the body’s natural feel-good chemicals. It can help energise our mood and even help us work through problems and provide an outlet for us to take control of our feelings. Music can help promote wellness, manage stress, express feelings, enhance your memory and even improve communication
Previous knowledge or experience: Anyone wanting to learn the guitar and improve their mental health by relaxing and learning to play a musical instrument
How will I learn: Through tutor demonstration, group discussions and playing the guitar
How will I be assessed: Tutor observation, playing the guitar

Next steps: This could lead to the Learning in Libraries Guitar for Improvers, Ukulele for Beginners courses, alternatively to membership of a local club
Attendance is expected at each session to ensure that you get the most out of your learning experience and to minimise disruption for other learners. Please advise the venue/tutor of any absence you may have.
