Hand Sewn Dorset Ring Button Workshop

Use Hand sewing to create a heritage Dorset Crosswheel Ring Button. You will practice the skills required to produce a traditional crosswheel Dorset Button. You will learn the stitches and techniques required to hand sew your own ring button for clothing, jewellery or decoration, whilst being in a friendly, classroom setting, with likeminded people. You will go on to make your own crosswheel Dorset Button, to take home with you.

  • Describe the 4 steps to create a Dorset Button
  • Perform casting to cover the ring in blanket stitches, using a long length of thread, catching the end of the thread under the initial stitches
  • Lock in the stitches after covering the ring
  • Demonstrate slicking the stitches when the ring has been filled
  • Practice Layering and Centralising the spoke stitches
  • Use Rounding Backstitch to fill in the button.

About the course: During the workshop you will learn the sewing skills and steps required to create a Dorset ring button – casting, slicking, layering, centralising and rounding. You will make a traditional crosswheel button to take home and use – maybe to embellish a Christmas decoration. The process of being creative can bring numerous health benefits and general feelings of wellbeing. Research shows that taking up Sewing can help, amongst other things depression, anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, insomnia and raising levels of happiness

Previous knowledge or experience: This course is practical and requires a degree of manual dexterity. You are required to be able to thread a needle, but anyone with an interest in sewing, complete beginners and more experienced sewers are all welcome!

How will I learn: Discussion, demonstration, and independent sewing in a friendly classroom environment

What shall I bring: Embroidery darning needle., Embroidery thread of your own colour choice (tutor will have some available), Small embroidery scissors, Paper and pens to make notes, Fabrics required to produce your own Dorset Ring button are included. Extra rings can be purchased from the tutor (cash), Please feel free to bring embroidery thread, scissors and darning needle
