Introduction to Quilling

Eastleigh Library

Friday 7th, 14th, 28th February and 7th March 2025

10.00am to 1.00pm

An introduction to the craft of paper quilling.

Learning Goals:

  • Demonstrate winding a paper strip into a coil, use a mould & secure
  • Manipulate several coils into at least four shapes and at least two scroll shapes
  • Arrange the coils and scrolls to create a picture
  • Describe how a craft activity can be mindful

About the course: Quilling is a craft that involves the use of paper strips, that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create a decorative design and dates back to the Renaissance. French and Italian nuns and monks used quilling to
decorate book covers and religious items. Today, there’s been a modern revival of this old craft.

Using simple paper rolling techniques, this workshop will show you how to manipulate the coils of paper into different shapes which are then arranged to create decorative pictures

Who is this course for: Anyone looking to develop their creative skills and improve their wellbeing

Previous knowledge or experience: None. Just lots of enthusiasm, willingness to learn and a desire to have fun. Dexterity is required because of the rolling and folding of the paper with hands.

How will I learn: This is a relaxing and friendly course with step-by-step demonstrations. You will be gently guided through different quilling activities, starting at the basics

How will I be assessed: Through observation, questioning, discussion and peer/self-evaluation.

What shall I bring: The tutor will provide all the tools and materials for your use during the course for a donation of £2 in total. Or please bring the following:

  • At least 100 Strips of coloured paper 10mm in width and at least 35cm in length
  • Slotted quilling tool
  • Tacky glue (PVA) in a small applicator bottle
