Level 3 Bikeability Training

Merdon Junior School, Chandlers Ford

Thurs 10th April 2025

12.30pm to 3.30pm

This course is for participants in Year 6 and above.

Participants must have completed Level 2 Bikeability and be competent and confident with all outcomes delivered on the Bikeability Level 2 course, showing these consistently within their riding. They must ride regularly and have experience of riding in different environments.

Please note, not every child is ready for Level 3 after completing Level 2. If you are unsure whether this course is suitable, please speak to a member of our team before booking.

The Level 3 Bikeability course develops participants’ skills and confidence so they can ride in different road environments, including complex, often busy roads and junctions, sometimes with speed limits above 30mph. It is delivered on progressively more challenging roads and junctions with a high volume of, or fast, motor traffic. The goal for participants is to link manoeuvres in a planned journey. By the end of the session, participants should understand that lifelong cycling involves continuous practice and improvement of skills.

Skills from the below list may be taught on the Level 3 course.

  • Using roundabouts
  • Riding with other riders
  • Using traffic lights and passing queuing traffic
  • Using cycling infrastructure
  • Using multi-lane roads
  • Using multi-lane roundabouts
  • Being aware of driver blind spots and sharing bus lanes
  • Riding on roads with a speed limit above 30mph

When participating in the level 3 course an instructor at any point may deem it is appropriate to teach the level 2 course if the participant’s ability is not at the required level to continue the level 3 course.

At the end of the course, each participant will receive a certificate and badge. The certificate will highlight areas of the Level 3 they have achieved independently, as well as areas that they need to practice further.

Additional information

  • The activity will take place outside, so please ensure that appropriate clothing is worn
  • Each participant will need a fully operational bike with two working brakes and a cycle helmet (we have some available on request)
