Looking at Past Societies Through Archaeology

Gosport Discovery Centre

Saturday 1st March 2025

10.00am to 1.00pm

To examine the evidence for the different ways of organising past societies(mainly
referring to the British Isles).

Learning goals:

Record the criteria for different levels of complexity of social organisation
Apply those criteria to a selected past society
Successfully recognise that past societies do not always increase in complexity through time

Who is this course for: Anyone with an interest in the past and how it can be investigated

Previous knowledge or experience: No previous knowledge is required, but a keen interest in the past helps.

What shall I bring: Bring notebooks, pencils, pens, a clear ruler.

Next steps: A programme of introductory course on different time periods and themes at the Discovery Centre (if not already attended) Plus information on Societies to join and sites and museums to visit, and finally more in-depth local courses to attend to increase knowledge and understanding of archaeology today
