More Sewing for Happiness

Wednesday 15th, 22nd, 29th January, 5th and 12th February 2025
6.30pm to 8.30pm
Demonstrate and identify skills and techniques for Dressmaking. This course is designed to help learners develop their sewing skills through a mixture of practice, discussion, and demonstration within a supportive, friendly online classroom environment. Each week you will practice a new skill to use for future personal projects: adjusting a neckline on the pattern, sewing a facing, adding a pocket in a seam, creating a welt pocket, making a 2-piece shirt collar.
Learning Goals:
- Describe and list 4 sewing terms
- Demonstrate the ability to use a sewing machine and identify stitches/functions/skills during the sew-a-longs
- Perform a minimum of 3 sewing and pattern cutting skills and techniques
- Describe the impact of sewing on well-being
About the course: The process of being creative can bring numerous health benefits and general feelings of wellbeing. Research shows that taking up Sewing can help, amongst other things depression, anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, insomnia and raising levels of happiness. Who is this course for: Those with experience using a dressmaking pattern, in addition to sewing
Previous knowledge or experience: You must have completed the Online Sewing for Happiness in a previous academic year. Be able to confidently operate a sewing machine and have basic dressmaking knowledge
How will I learn: Discussion, demonstration, and independent sewing in a virtual classroom via zoom
How will I be assessed: Before the course starts you will be sent an online form, the tutor will use the information to assess your previous experience. This will help the Tutor get to know you and to be able to provide a more tailored teaching. Each week you will be sent the resources required for the lesson. You are required to complete further paperwork at the end of the course as part of the assessment. During the length of the course, you will have contact with the Tutor via a Facebook group or email for any questions/concerns. Each week you will produce a mix of stitched samples during a sew-a-long and/or mini pattern cutting samples. Please note, you may need to use
your personal time to complete the item you are making because of the time constraints
What shall I bring: Sewing machine, scissors (fabric and paper), printed handouts (emailed each week to print at home), fabric for samples (and materials for an optional chosen project to embed skills), needle and thread, notions for such as interfacing, pins, tape measure, ruler, pens and pencils; paper, celotape/masking tape
