Origami for Beginners

Basingstoke Discovery Centre

Friday 20th, 27th September, 4th, 11th and 18th October 2024

10.00am to 12.00pm

To develop origami skills while promoting well-being in relaxing and interactive class. To learn the fundamental folds and techniques. To create useful, decorative and fun models like flowers, boxes, organisers, modular and action models. To improve creative thinking skills and self-expression.

Learning Goals: (by the end of the course you will be able to…)

  • Describe the benefits of origami to your overall well-being and beyond
  • Identify basic origami symbols, diagrams and terminology used in origami instructions
  • Use origami folding techniques to create precise and neat models
  • Apply knowledge of base folds, bases and techniques to start origami journey and progress to more complex models
  • Create various simple models like decorative models, useful boxes, organisers, action models
  • Demonstrate confidence and patience in your origami practice

About the course: This course will embark you on your origami journey. Designers can use origami concepts in their designing and create effective and contemporary designs. You can find storage solutions in folded boxes. Add a personal touch to your gift presentation and make it unique. The possibilities are endless. It is good to keep practising origami for well-being as it calms the mind.

Who is this course for: Anyone who would like to learn about the magical art of paper folding and explore its infinite possibilities

What you will learn: You will learn at least three basic folds, identify four bases

Previous knowledge or experience: None required

How will I learn: Participants will be given oral and visual instructions and have hands-on experience of folding models during the sessions.

How will I be assessed: Tutor observation and individual work.

What shall I bring: For the first session, you will need to buy/bring:

  • At least 25 origami sheets usually 15x 15 cm in size, one side coloured and one side white. Absolute beginners should avoid patterned paper
  • 4 A-4 sheets
  • Pad and pen

This course, funded by Hampshire Achieves, is aimed at Hampshire residents aged 19+. Attendance is expected at each session to
