Pen & Watercolour – Mindful Mark Making

Eastleigh Library

Friday 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th May 2024

10.00am to 1.00pm

An introduction to combining pen with watercolours.

  • Use fine liner pens to draw at least two shapes and turn them into a form with either lines or values applied
  • Apply one colour group to at least one sketch using the colour wheel theory
  • Create at least two pen and watercolour drawings
  • Identify how a creative activity can be mindful

About the course: Fine liner pen and watercolour are beautiful mediums and when used together they create stunning effects

Who is this course for: Individuals looking to develop their creative skills using graphic pens and watercolours, over four informal fun sessions

Previous knowledge or experience: Some experience of watercolour is required along with lots of enthusiasm, willingness to learn and a desire to have fun. This is a very loose style of drawing and painting and so very suitable for those who have just started using pen and watercolour

How will I learn: This is a relaxing and friendly course with step-by-step demonstrations.  You will be gently guided through different drawing and painting activities, starting at the basics. Each week will focus on specific elements used within art, with natural forms and other artists work as the subject. The focus is on small scale sketches rather than a big final painting

How will I be assessed: Through observation, questioning, discussion and peer/self-evaluation

What shall I bring:

  • Watercolour paper (Cold or Hot Pressed) 140lb/300gsm A4 pad or block or loose sheets
  • A5 or A4 Sketch pad (doesn’t have to be expensive) or loose paper
  • HB Pencil, rubber and sharpener
  • Ruler
  • Waterproof fine liner pens (like the brand Uni pin) at least 0.1, 0.5 and 0.8 sizes or a black biro
  • Flat and round paint brushes small and medium (brushes come in number size but vary so much between brands, hence a rough guide)
  • Water pots x 2
  • Watercolour pans set or tubes at least Ultramarine blue, Crimson red, Cadmium red, Lemon yellow and a Brown like Burnt umber
  • Kitchen roll
  • Palette
  • Apron
