This course provides an introduction to communication skills needed in the workplace. Learners will develop confidence in introducing themselves, taking part in social and workplace conversations, giving instructions, and asking for clarification when they do not understand information or tasks. This course aims to help ESOL learners develop the English language and communication skills needed to participate confidently in workplace interactions and prepare for employment.

Learning Goals:

  • Introduce yourself and exchange at least 4 pieces of information.
  • Participate in social conversations, using 3 different types of questions.
  • Use at least 4 different ways of giving instructions.
  • Recognise and practice 3 ways of asking for clarification.

Who is this course for: This course, funded by UK government, is for Hampshire residents aged 19+ whose first language is not English and who would like to improve their communication skills in preparation for employment. It is suitable for learners who want to build confidence in speaking English in workplace and social situations, improve their ability to interact with colleagues, and develop essential communication skills for work.

Please note: Eligibility criteria applies and will be checked upon enrolment.

Course purpose: Preparation for employment 

Previous knowledge or experience: No previous work experience is required. Learners should have ESOL skills at approximately Entry 2 to Entry 3 level and be able to participate in simple speaking, listening, reading and writing activities in English.

How will I learn: You will learn in a small, supportive online group through tutor presentations, pair and group discussions, role-plays, communication activities, and practical workplace scenarios. You will have opportunities to practise speaking, listening, reading and vocabulary skills throughout the course.

How will I be assessed: Your progress will be assessed through observation, questioning, pair and group work, role-play activities, and practical communication tasks. You will also review your progress against your individual learning goals.

What shall I bring: You will need:

  • Access to a computer, laptop or tablet with internet connection with access to Microsoft Teams
  • A microphone and speaker/headphones
  • A pen and notebook for making notes

This course, funded by Hampshire Achieves, is aimed at Hampshire residents aged 19+. Attendance is expected at each session to ensure that you get the most out of your learning experience and to minimise disruption for other learners. Please advise the venue/tutor of any absence you may have.
