D-Day Talk
Lepe Country Park
Monday 7th September 2026
7.00pm to 8.00pm
Talk by Dr Phil Marter, Senior Lecturer in the Archaeology of the Recent Past, University of Winchester.
Marshalling Camps hosted thousands of troops gathering for the D-Day invasion on the 6 June 1944 and formed a key part of the operational plan for Operation Overlord. In the years since, the camps have largely been forgotten, overgrown by woodland and increasingly threatened by modern development. As part of the Hampshire’s Hidden D-Day project led by The D-Day Story, 23 camps between Emsworth and Brockenhurst were surveyed, recording new archaeological findings. In this talk, Dr Marter explores some examples of what remains, reflects on the potential of the information collected and the D-Day heritage legacy.
Dr Phil Marter specialises in the archaeology and heritage of conflict with particular focus on the archaeology of WWII. He is involved in fieldwork and research on 20th century military camps, aviation crash sites and historic battlefields.
