Developing the Craft of Creative Writing

10.00am to 12.00pm

Aims of the Course: The aim of this course is to teach key craft elements of the creative writing process. This course is intended for all learners interested in improving their skill in creative writing from beginners to intermediate level writers

This is an online course delivered via Microsoft Teams. You’ll receive a link to join the session. You don’t need to download the Teams app, just click the link to join as a guest. If you already use Teams and have an Office365 account, you’re welcome to use the app.

Learning Goals:

  • Build compelling characters to form the foundation of their story.
  • Explain the importance of writing from a specific point of view
  • Explain the importance of story structure, story beats and pacing.
  • Explain the difference between plotting and discovery drafts and how to build from there.
  • Explain the importance of opening lines as well as how the choice of genre affects reader expectations in terms of manuscript length and story beats.

Who is this course for: This course, funded by UK government for Hampshire residents aged 19+, is a relaxed and friendly course for anyone interested in writing. Whether you write short stories, novellas, full length fiction and/or non-fiction, this course should be useful.

Previous knowledge or experience: If you’ve been thinking about writing, but haven’t started yet, or if you have been writing for a while and want to know how to take your work to the next level, or, if you are simply fascinated with how the writing process works, then do come along.

How will I learn: Through informal discussion and writing exercises

How will I be assessed: Through informal discussion.

What shall I bring: Writing materials i.e. pen/pencil and paper or laptop.

Next steps: Joining a writing group whether in person or online. Attending more advanced writing workshops whether in person or online. Attending writing festivals to meet other writers and learn how they are developing their work. This course, funded by Hampshire

Attendance is expected at each session to ensure that you get the most out of your learning experience and to minimise disruption for other learners. Please advise the venue/tutor of any absence you may have.
