The English countryside was once dominated by elms, but since the 1960s these trees have been ravaged by Dutch elm disease, accidently introduced to Europe in the early 20th century. The disease has killed nearly all the mature elms in Britain, an estimated toll of 60-100 million trees.
Selective breeding of elms now means we can bring these back to Hampshire. There are many different varieties and hybrids that closely resemble the English elm and have shown good resistance to the disease. These disease resistant elms should be able to grow to maturity and support our native wildlife, including the white-letter hairstreak butterfly which has declined in numbers since the disease took hold.
So far, we have planted over 1,200 elms across Hampshire. With your help, we can continue with our trial, planting different hybrids to see which are the most successful in supporting a wide variety of biodiversity and which show the best resistance to the disease.
Just £25 will plant one elm tree (up to 250cm tall). We will plant the trees in areas that are visible from parks, nature reserves, farms, roads and paths so you can see the trees as they grow, across the Hampshire countryside.
You will be provided with a certificate to say thank you.
