This course provides a gentle and supportive introduction to drawing and painting, focusing on building confidence, reducing anxiety about learning, and encouraging creative self-expression. It aims to help learners develop selfbelief, feel comfortable in a group setting, and gain motivation to continue learning and engaging in creative or community activities.
Learning Goals:
- Participate in at least one group discussion or shared activity, demonstrating increased confidence in a creative environment
- Complete at least two observational drawing exercises using different techniques (e.g. line, tone, or shape)
- Identify and use colours from the colour wheel in a practical activity
- Mix and apply at least three secondary colours within a piece of artwork
- Reflect (verbally or in writing) on how engaging in creative activities has supported personal wellbeing, confidence, or motivation
About the course: This course offers a supportive and accessible introduction to drawing and painting, designed to help learners build confidence, reduce anxiety about learning, and enjoy creative expression. Through relaxed, group-based activities, learners will develop skills at their own pace while connecting with others and gaining motivation to continue their learning journey.
Who is this course for: This course, funded by the UK government, is for Hampshire residents aged 19+. It is ideal for beginners, those lacking confidence, individuals returning to learning, or anyone wanting to improve wellbeing and reduce isolation through creative activity.
Please note: Eligibility criteria applies and will be checked upon enrolment.
Course purpose: To improve health and wellbeing
Previous knowledge or experience: No previous experience necessary. Activities will be adapted to support all learners, with step-bystep guidance and encouragement to ensure everyone can participate at their own pace.
How will I learn: We will be working at a steady pace with lots of room for exploration and extra exercises can be given for those wishing to continue at home. We will learn through discussion, demonstration and practical exploration
How will I be assessed: Assessment will be informal and supportive, focusing on personal progress and increased confidence, willingness to try new activities, participation in group discussions and tasks and reflection on learning and achievements.
What shall I bring: From week 2 onward please bring an apron or wear old clothes. Please bring a sketch book, complete set of acrylic paints, a canvas board, pack of mixed media paper and a basic brush pack
Next steps: This course can lead to other Learning in Libraries art courses such as Drawing & Painting for Improvers, Atmospheric Beachscapes or join Rachel for a Christmas Workshop. Alternatively, join a local art group such as Tadley & Baughurst Art Club or Oakridge West Art Club.
This course, funded by Hampshire Achieves, is aimed at Hampshire residents aged 19+. Attendance is expected at each session to ensure that you get the most out of your learning experience and to minimise disruption for other learners. Please advise the venue/tutor of any absence you may have.
