Drawing for Beginners

New Milton Library

Monday 22nd, 29th September, 6th, 13th and 20th October 2025

10.00am to 12.30pm

The course will introduce a variety of drawing techniques, encouraging participants to explore and develop their own creative style. As the weeks unfold, these techniques will build upon one another, leading to the creation of unique and expressive artworks.

Alongside artistic growth, the course offers a calming space for reflection and self expression—supporting wellbeing through the mindful practice of drawing.

Learning Goals:

  • Develop your confidence using perspective to create realistic drawings
  • Discover at least 3 techniques using a variety of tone, line, colour and mixed media
  • Demonstrate in your final piece of artwork an understanding into line and tone
  • Self-evaluate how engaging with drawing can improve your wellbeing

About the course: This course will introduce a range of drawing techniques to help you build your skills and confidence. Working in a small, friendly group, you’ll create your own, tutor led, unique artwork as the weeks go on. The sessions offer a relaxed space to enjoy being creative, connect with others, and support your wellbeing through art.

Who is this course for: The course is for individuals looking to develop their drawing skills and knowledge on drawing and art.

Previous knowledge or experience: No previous knowledge is required. No previous skills are required except lots of enthusiasm, a willingness to learn and a desire to have fun.

How will I learn: Each week you will be guided through different drawing techniques. As the weeks progress, you will learn to combine the skills together to create artwork which will look original, realistic and amazing.

How will I be assessed: Through personal evaluation, observation and questioning.

What shall I bring: Listed are ideas of what you’ll need, a variety is good:

  • A5 or A4 sketchbook or loose paper
  • Pencils within the 4B to 4H range
  • Coloured pencils
  • Rubber
  • Black biro or black felt tip, or black fine line drawing pen or black sharpie pen
  • Scissors and Pritt stick glue
