Drawing Light Out of Darkness: Drawing with Charcoal and White Pastel

Yateley Library

Saturday 9th May 2026

10.00am to 1.00pm

The aim of the course is to try out the Chiaroscuro technique by using toned paper as a foundational mid-value, "carving" light out of darkness with erasers and white pastel. Learners can relax ad enjoy the meditative, stress-reducing power of tactile drawing in a supportive environment.

Learning Goals:

  • Complete a 5-step value scale using charcoal, toned paper, and white pastel
  • Draw a 3D object featuring at least three distinct light zones (shadow, mid-tone, highlight).
  • Demonstrate subtractive drawing by using erasers to "find" the light.
  • Achieve a state of relaxation through drawing with tactile media.

Who is this course for: This course is for anyone who loves drawing and would like to improve their perception and rendering of light and darkness to show three-dimensionality.
