Drawing the Portrait - From Sketch to Fine Art

To be able to understand and apply the fundamentals of portraiture using both graphite and charcoal whilst improving your wellbeing.

Learning Goals:

  • Discuss and define the structure of the human face in order to draw individual features in a realistic manner
  • Draw a series of sketches, at least 3, displaying key characteristics
  • Identify and sketch a series of facial features using tone to develop realism (graphite and charcoal)
  • Demonstrate a fine art portrait drawing whilst developing learned skills of tonal variation
  • Describe the impact of using watercolours on your wellbeing

Who is this course for: Anyone wishing to gain an understanding of portraiture, achieving a likeness and gesture/character of a person. Developing line drawings to move the work in to a full tonal drawing and creating fine art drawings.

Previous knowledge or experience: None required

How will I learn: Everyone will learn though demonstration and practical application

How will I be assessed: Regular critique during lessons from a professional artist

What shall I bring: £10 to give to the artist as a contribution towards his materials which include the charcoal used to produce fine art drawings

Next steps: Understanding colour in painting – a course designed to help the painter develop a fuller understanding of colour theory and its application

Painting the portrait in watercolour – a course to further develop your interest in portraiture

Attendance is expected at each session to ensure that you get the most out of your learning experience and to minimise disruption for other learners. Please advise the venue/tutor of any absence you may have.
