Dressmaking you Calm
Online course
Wednesday 5th, 12th, 19th. 26th November and 3rd December 2025
6.30pm to 8.30pm
This course is designed to help learners develop their sewing skills through a mixture of practice, discussion, and demonstration within a supportive, friendly online classroom environment with like-minded learners. Each week you will practice a new skill to use for future personal projects: adjusting a neckline on the pattern, sewing a facing, adding a pocket in a seam, creating a welt pocket, making a 2-piece shirt collar.
- Describe and list 4 sewing items
- Demonstrate the ability to use a sewing machine and identify stitches/functions/skills during the sew-a-longs
- Perform a minimum of 3 sewing and pattern cutting skills and techniques
- Self-evaluate the impact of sewing on well-being
About the course: The process of being creative can bring numerous health benefits and general feelings of wellbeing. Research shows that taking up sewing can help (amongst other things) depression, anxiety, stress, low self-esteem, insomnia and raising levels of happiness. Connecting and learning supports the HCC 5 ways to Wellbeing.
Who is this course for: Those who have some experience with Dressmaking; those who have previously completed the Sewing for Happiness online course OR a face-to-face Dressmaking course.
Previous knowledge or experience: Be able to confidently operate a sewing machine and have basic dressmaking knowledge
How will I learn: Discussion, demonstration, and independent sewing in a virtual classroom via Microsoft Teams
How will I be assessed: Before the course starts you will be sent an online form, the tutor will use the information to assess your previous experience. This will help the Tutor get to know you and to be able to provide a more tailored teaching. Each week you will be sent the resources required for the lesson. You are required to complete further paperwork at the end of the course as part of the assessment. During the length of the course, you will have contact with the tutor via a Facebook group or email for any
questions/concerns. Each week you will produce a mix of stitched samples during a sew-a-long and/or mini pattern cutting samples.
Please note, you may need to use your personal time to complete the item you are making because of the time constraints.
What shall I bring: Sewing machine, scissors (fabric and paper), printed handouts (emailed each week to print at home), fabric for samples (and materials for an optional chosen project to embed skills), needle and thread, notions for such as interfacing, pins, tape measure, ruler, pens and pencils; paper, cellotape/masking tape
Next steps: Further sewing courses such as online Mindful Pattern Cutting; Dressmaking with Lareen
