This course will provide learners with the essential language skills that they need to be able to communicate more confidently in English. Through covering areas such as grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, punctuation, writing and reading, and speaking and listening, the learners will develop a better understanding of the English language.
Learning Goals:
- Listen and respond appropriately to spoken language, expressing and responding to opinions in discussions on familiar and new topics.
- Use previously learned vocabulary and subject-specific language to participate independently in discussions on new topics with improved accuracy and confidence.
- Read and discuss a range of texts, demonstrating understanding through verbal or written responses and clear pronunciation when reading aloud.
- Apply grammar skills and knowledge in speaking and writing to communicate information and opinions, adapting language for different purposes.
About the course: An opportunity to improve your spoken English, comprehension and written English in a group setting.
Who is this course for: This course, funded by UK government is for Hampshire residents aged 19+ who would like to improve their English skills.
Please note: Eligibility criteria applies and will be checked upon enrolment.
Course purpose: To improve essential skills
Previous knowledge or experience: Learners should be able to speak and understand some English at Entry 3/Pre-intermediate level; initial assessment by the tutor during the first session.
How will I learn: Learning will be adapted according to the learner’s level of understanding. There will be group and paired discussions, focussing on real life scenarios and communication skills.
How will I be assessed: Informal observation and tutor assessment throughout the course
What shall I bring: Please bring a notebook and pen
Next steps: Continued enrolment with ESOL Intermediate; Community Connections and/or Hong Kong Connections at a local library; ESOL – Introduction to English for driving theory/ Further English for driving theory; ESOL – Life in the UK (Preparing for UK citizenship); Accredited online ESOL course (Reading) Entry 3.
This course, funded by Hampshire Achieves, is aimed at Hampshire residents aged 19+. Attendance is expected at each session to ensure that you get the most out of your learning experience and to minimise disruption for other learners. Please advise the venue/tutor of any absence you may have. If you have limited mobility which could affect your ability to safely self-evacuate, please let us know when booking.
