This course aims to build your confidence in workplace communication by developing the language needed to express opinions politely, participate in discussions, solve workplace problems, write professional emails and reports, and understand common workplace terminology. This course aims to support you in developing the skills needed to communicate effectively in a range of workplace situations.

Learning Goals:

  • Use at least 3 phrases to disagree and reject ideas politely in workplace discussions.
  • Write a short professional email or report (minimum 50 words) using appropriate tone and structure.
  • Recognise and use at least 10 words related to equipment and departments.
  • Describe 2 possible solutions to a problem using modal verbs.

Who is this course for: This course, funded by UK government, is for Hampshire residents aged 19+ whose first language is not English and is designed to improve your communication skills for the workplace. It will help you to communicate more confidently and effectively in a range of workplace situations.

Please note: Eligibility criteria applies and will be checked upon enrolment.

Course purpose: Preparation for employment

Previous knowledge or experience: You should have ESOL skills at approximately Entry 2 to Entry 3 level and be able to participate in reading, speaking, listening and writing activities in English.

How will I learn: You will learn in a small, supportive online group through tutor presentations, discussions, role-plays, practical workplace scenarios, vocabulary activities, and writing tasks. You will have opportunities to develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills throughout the course.

How will I be assessed: Your progress will be assessed through observation, questioning, group discussions, role-play activities, practical tasks, written work, and completion of workplace communication activities. You will also review your progress against your individual learning goals.

What shall I bring: You will need:

  • access to a computer, laptop or tablet with internet connection with access to Microsoft Teams
  • a microphone and speaker/headphones
  • a pen and notebook for making notes

This course, funded by Hampshire Achieves, is aimed at Hampshire residents aged 19+. Attendance is expected at each session to ensure that you get the most out of your learning experience and to minimise disruption for other learners. Please advise the venue/tutor of any absence you may have. If you have limited mobility which could affect your ability to safely self-evacuate, please let us know when booking.
