Get a Grip: Drawing Hands in Pencil
Yateley Library
Saturday 15th November 2025
10.00am to 1.00pm
Building on the techniques taught in Drawing for beginners, learners will work on their
skills and accuracy in using line and tone with pencil when drawing hands. We will discuss how hands are expressive, and therefore an important part of portraiture, and look at examples of hands in art.
Learning Goals:
- Explain why hands are an important part of portraiture using examples from the art world
- Demonstrate how to break down the hands into easy- to-draw chunks as a base for development
- Use light and shade to make hands appear three dimensional
- Choose expressive positions and poses for reference pictures
About the course: If you've taken 'Drawing for Beginners', this is a great next step. We
'll keep building your skills with pencil, focusing on how to use line and tone to draw hands more accurately. Hands can be expressive, especially in portraits, so we
’ll look at some inspiring examples from art
