Hampshire Educational Psychology – Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA) West Initial Training for 2026/2027

Wednesday 14th October, 4th November, 25th November 2026, 13th January, 10th February and 10th March 2027

9.30am to 3.30pm

We are offering ELSA training for learning support assistants/teaching assistants working in county schools and colleges in the following areas:- Winchester, Test Valley South, Eastleigh and New Forest.

What the course includes:

• Six days of training delivered by Educational psychologists.
• A combination of whole group teaching, tutor demonstrations, small group work and practice sessions. Cohort size: approx. 35
• Refreshments (please note lunch is not provided). 
• Course materials, including a copy of the book “Excellent ELSAs: Top Tips for Emotional Literacy Support Assistants” by Sheila Burton.

Terms and conditions of the Training and Support Contract; in summary:

• Release each ELSA for every training session and twice-termly supervision sessions; allocate time each week for each ELSA (normally the equivalent of a day per week); allocate time for each ELSA to plan their sessions (20% of their ELSA time should be for preparation, planning and monitoring targets);
• Organise a suitable working space in school, for ELSAs to fulfil their responsibilities;     
• Allocate a budget for purchase of appropriate emotional literacy resources.
