Introduction to Computers for Beginners

Tuesday 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th January, 3rd and 10th February 2026

10.00am to 12.00pm

This course will help you get started with using a computer and develop your confidence for using your device. This FREE course is aimed at adults who would like to develop their digital skills in a small, supportive group with help from an experienced tutor. You will learn all the basics and the key terms you need to get started

Learning Goals:

  • Name and identify different computer components
  • Use a keyboard, mouse and/or trackpad with increasing skill
  • Learn how to create files and folders (managing content)
  • Demonstrate simple word processing skills (typing, saving and retrieving files).
  • Navigate web browsers and search engines;
  • Explain simple, effective methods for staying safe online

About the course: The course aims to introduce complete beginners to the essential functions and components of a computer in a supportive, hands-on environment. It builds foundational skills in using hardware, navigating operating systems, browsing the internet, and creating basic documents. By the end of the course, learners will feel more confident using computers for everyday tasks and further learning.

Who is this course for: This course, funded by UK government, is for Hampshire residents aged 19+ who have no prior computer experience and a good grasp of the the English Language

Previous knowledge or experience: This practical course is suitable for both complete novices as well as those wishing to refresh their digital skills and develop more confidence using a computer

How will I learn:  Tutor demonstration, individual and practical activities. You will learn at your own pace and your tutor will tailor your learning to your own level and interests.

How will I be assessed: There is no formal assessment. The tutor will observe learners during the lessons and provide feedback and peer support

What shall I bring: A notebook and pen. Devices are available for use during this course – session times only

Next steps: Introducing Internet Safety: A Beginner’s Guide to Navigating the Web; work with library branch Digital Champions; digital follow-on courses such as those provided by Learn My Way or Future Learn.

This course, funded by Hampshire Achieves, is aimed at Hampshire residents aged 19+. Attendance is expected at each session to ensure that you get the most out of your learning experience and to minimise disruption for other learners. Please advise the venue/tutor of any absence you may have.
