This course provides an introduction to English for driving in the UK. Learners will develop key driving vocabulary, learn about car safety features, light signals and common road signs, understand basic motorway rules, and gain confidence with driving theory questions. This course aims to introduce ESOL learners to the English language needed for driving in the UK.

Learning Goals:

  • Identify 10 words describing parts of a car.
  • Recognise 5 light signals and say what the driver must do.
  • Recognise 5 common road signs and say what the driver must do.
  • Answer at least 5 driving theory test questions correctly.

Who is this course for: This course, funded by UK government, is for Hampshire residents aged 19+ whose first language is not English and who would like to improve their English language skills while learning about driving in the UK. It is suitable for learners who are considering learning to drive, preparing for future driving theory study, or wanting to gain confidence in understanding UK road rules and driving-related vocabulary.

Please note: Eligibility criteria applies and will be checked upon enrolment.

Course purpose: To develop stronger communities

Previous knowledge or experience: No previous driving knowledge or experience is required. Learners should have ESOL skills at approximately Entry 2 to Entry 3 level and be able to participate in simple reading, speaking, listening and writing activities in English.

How will I learn: You will learn in a small, supportive online group through a variety of activities including tutor presentations, discussions and practical theory-test style exercises. You will have opportunities to practise speaking, listening, reading and vocabulary skills throughout the course.

How will I be assessed: Your progress will be assessed through observation, questioning, group discussions, practical activities, and completion of homework and theory-test style questions. You will also review your progress against your individual learning goals

What shall I bring: You will need:

  • Access to a computer, laptop or tablet with internet connection with access to Microsoft Teams
  • A microphone and speaker/headphones
  • A pen and notebook for making notes

This course, funded by Hampshire Achieves, is aimed at Hampshire residents aged 19+. Attendance is expected at each session to ensure that you get the most out of your learning experience and to minimise disruption for other learners. Please advise the venue/tutor of any absence you may have.
