Introduction to Oils

Yateley Library

Saturday 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th June 2025

10.00am to 12.00pm

The aim of the course is for learners to enjoy discovering how to paint in oils, and how to use the medium to achieve different effects with different techniques. They will learn about materials, and discover how to paint simple scenes using tried and tested techniques, taught through demonstration and hands on painting. The target learners for this course are those who have already completed beginners or improvers courses in any media, or any learner who would like to explore using a new media.

Learning Goals:

  • Select appropriate brushes, support and mediums to work with oil paints.
Identify and describe the techniques you will use
  • Demonstrate use of tone to create a tonal underpainting or a grisaille that shows light, shadow and three dimensionality
  • Demonstrate colour mixing to represent colour accurately in simple paintings
  • Describe the benefits of painting as a mindful relaxation habit
