Creative Calm: A Festive Quilling Journey

Bishop’s Waltham Library

Wednesdays 3rd and 10th December 2025

10.00am to 1.00pm

An introduction to the craft of paper quilling.

Learning Goals:

  • Demonstrate winding a paper strip into a coil, use a mould, pinch to a shape & secure
  • Practice creating foliage items such as, leaves, pine needles, berries, by using basic quilling techniques
  • Create a Christmas themed wreath featuring at least 3 different types of quilling shapes, arranged in a repeated pattern
  • Describe how a craft activity can be mindful

About the course: Quilling is a craft that involves the use of paper strips, that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create a decorative design and dates back to the Renaissance. French and Italian nuns and monks used quilling to decorate book covers and religious items.

Today, there’s been a modern revival of this old craft. Using simple paper rolling techniques, this course will show you how to manipulate the paper strips into different shapes which are then arranged to create a 3D wreath.

Who is this course for: Anyone looking to develop their creative skills and improve their wellbeing

Previous knowledge or experience: None. Just lots of enthusiasm, willingness to learn and a desire to have fun. Dexterity is required because of the rolling and folding of the paper with hands.

How will I learn: This is a relaxing and friendly course with step-by-step demonstrations. You will be gently guided through different quilling activities, starting at the basics

How will I be assessed: Through observation, questioning, discussion and peer/self-evaluation.

What shall I bring: The tutor will provide all the tools and materials for your use during the course for a £6 fee, in total. Or please bring the following:

  • 13cm Embroidery Hoop (This can be bought separately)
  • Ball of Natural coloured twine (This can be bought separately)
