This course is for anyone who would like to learn how to read music notation up to Grade 1 level.

  • Identify 5 different types of notes and state their lengths
  • Identify 5 different symbols and signs in a piece of sheet music
  • Name the notes in the Treble and Bass clefs
  • Write a 5-bar tune on manuscript paper
  • State the benefits of music and our mental health

About the course: During the course you will learn how to read basic music notation including symbols, notes and note lengths. The course will include opportunities to listen to different styles of music as well, which can boost our mental health. At the end of the course you will be given instructions on how to book a Grade 1 theory exam should you wish to progress further. There is a fee for taking the optional test

Previous knowledge or experience: None required

How will I learn: This is a relaxing and friendly course which will include step by step demonstrations. You will be guided through different activities and exercises to help improve you understanding of how to read music notation. You will also have the opportunity to experience the benefits of music to our mental health

How will I be assessed: Through observation, questioning, discussion and peer/self-evaluation
