Level 2 Bikeability Training - road training

St Bede's Catholic Primary School, Basingstoke

Thurs 17th April 2025

9.00am to 12.00pm or 12.30pm to 3.30pm

This course is for children in Year 5 and above.

The Level 2 Bikeability course is for those who can already cycle and are looking to improve their awareness and safety on the roads.

To access this course, participants must be able to:

  • Ride confidently
  • Look over their shoulder whilst cycling
  • Cycle one handed (signalling)

If the participant can complete the above, they do not need to have completed a Level one Bikeability course beforehand. A level one assessment will be carried out at the beginning of the session in a traffic-free environment (playground) to ensure the participant has met the required standard and is safe to go out on the road. If they do not meet the required standard, you will be notified.

The participant will then go out onto local residential roads. The Level 2 course will increase participants knowledge and understanding of the road and traffic environment and will develop and encourage safe cycling skills.

The participant will learn how to:

  • start and stop an on-road journey
  • U-turn
  • pass a side road and stationary vehicle
  • turn left and right in and out of minor and major roads
  • use different road positions
  • be aware of other road users and hazards
  • make decisions whilst cycling
  • recognise signals, signs and road-markings

At the end of the course, each participant will receive a certificate and badge. The certificate will highlight areas of the Level 2 they have achieved independently, as well as areas that they need to practice further.

Additional information

  • The activity will take place outside, so please ensure that appropriate clothing is worn
  • Each participant will need a fully operational bike with two working brakes and a cycle helmet (we have some available on request)
  • Participants must wear a helmet
  • A hi-vis jacket will be given to any participant who is cycling on the road - you can bring your own if you would like too

Participants who successfully complete our Level 2 Bikeability course and are an experienced and confident cyclist, may be able to progress to the Bikeability Level 3 course. If the participant is interested in completing the Level 3 course, please discuss this with the instructor at the end of the session or email bikeability.enquiries@hants.gov.uk

No refunds are given unless we need to cancel the course.
