This course is part of a series of Life in the UK courses designed to support your preparation for the Life in the UK Citizenship Test. Through the topic of British Values and Principles, you will develop your understanding of the values that underpin life in modern Britain, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance. The course will also provide opportunities to develop English language, communication and citizenship vocabulary skills, helping you become a more confident and informed member of your community. This course aims to develop your understanding of British values, principles and life in the UK while building the English language skills, confidence and knowledge needed for the Life in the UK Citizenship Test and for active participation in society.

Learning Goals:

  • Identify and describe at least five cultural, social, and economic aspects of life in the UK
  • Provide an example how each of the British values influence UK society
  • Identify 2 important events in the development of the UK democracy.
  • Answer at least 5 test questions..

Who is this course for: This course, funded by UK government, is for Hampshire residents aged 19+ who are learning English and is designed to improve your understanding of life in the UK. It forms part of a series of Life in the UK courses designed to support your preparation for the Life in the UK Citizenship Test. The course combines citizenship knowledge with opportunities to develop your English language, communication and study skills. It is suitable for you if you would like to become a more confident, informed and active member of your community.

Please note: Eligibility criteria applies and will be checked upon enrolment.

Course purpose: To develop stronger communities 

Previous knowledge or experience: No previous knowledge of British values, principles or UK society is required. You should have English language skills at Entry 2 level or above so that you can take part in discussions and learning activities.

How will I learn: You will learn in a small, friendly and supportive group through tutor-led presentations, discussions, pair and group activities, reading tasks and practical exercises. Activities will help you develop both your knowledge of British values and principles and your English language skills. You will also have opportunities to practise answering Life in the UK Citizenship Test questions. 

How will I be assessed: Your progress will be assessed through participation in class activities, discussions, quizzes, worksheets, question-and answer sessions and other learning tasks that demonstrate your understanding of the course topics and key vocabulary. You will also review your progress against your individual learning goals. 

What shall I bring: You will need:

  • Access to a computer, laptop or tablet with internet connection with access to Microsoft Teams
  • A microphone and speaker/headphones
  • A pen and notebook for making notes

This course, funded by Hampshire Achieves, is aimed at Hampshire residents aged 19+. Attendance is expected at each session to ensure that you get the most out of your learning experience and to minimise disruption for other learners. Please advise the venue/tutor of any absence you may have.
