Make Do and Visibly Mend

10.00am to 12.00pm
You will investigate how to visibly mend garments using hand stitching, adding patches on top or underneath, planning which stitches to use, through a mixture of practice, discussion, and demonstration within a supportive, friendly classroom environment. .
You have the choice to continue working on samples for the duration of the course, or in week 2 bring in a garment e.g. a pair of jeans, to plan and start visibly mending.
Learning Goals:
- Use 2 ways to mark the pattern onto fabric (tailors chalk & washable pen)
- Create a Sashiko running stitch with gaps half the length of the stitch
- Turn stitched corners, cross lines and intersections
- Stitch (minimum) 3 Sashiko stitch patterns onto fabric using a variety of templates
- Practice starting and finishing a row of stitches without using a knot
- Make a Hatamusubi (loom knot) to avoid wasting thread.
- Discuss ideas for patching/ mending using decorative stitching, inspired by Sashiko and Boro
About the course: Inspired by Japanese Sashiko and Boro, you will experiment with using hand stitching and patches to demonstrate how you can repair, strengthen and mend clothes.
Who is this course for: Worried about the impact your clothes have on Climate change? The fashion industry is one of the highest polluters, but you can make a difference by stitching new life into old clothes - learning to make do and mend with the art of ‘visible mending’ using hand stitching
Previous knowledge or experience: Anyone with an interest in sewing and mending clothes; complete beginners and more experienced sewers are all welcome! This course is practical and requires a degree of manual dexterity
How will I learn: You will spend your time practicing hand sewing stitches and skills, inspired by Japanese Sashiko and Boro, using preloved garments and waste fabric offcuts, to create samples for future reference and if time allows plan and begin repairing a favourite garment
How will I be assessed: You are required to complete a form to identify how you feel about the learning objectives, this will inform the tutor of previous experience and reasons for joining the course. This will help Lareen get to know you and to be able to provide a more tailored teaching
You will be required to complete paperwork at the end of the course as part of your assessment. You will produce stitched samples plus option of repairing an item of clothing (you may need to use your personal time to complete the samples/ repair because of time constraints
What shall I bring: Sashiko or embroidery needle (sharp point), Sashiko thread (usually white), small fabric/embroidery scissors, tailors chalk/ water soluble pen, pins, notepad and pen, pencil and ruler, fabric for samples and mending (an old pair of jeans is ideal), from week 2 option to bring an item to mend
This course is aimed at Hampshire residents aged 19+ Attendance is expected at each session to ensure that you get the most out of your learning experience and to minimise disruption for other learners. Please advise the venue/tutor of any absence you may have.
