Learn how to create portraits that capture a person's unique characteristics by focusing
on composition, natural gestures, and using light and shadow to form the features.
Capturing a likeness is important, but it's just the starting point. To go beyond, we will focus on suggesting emotion in the portrait to create a connection with the viewer. This helps capture the essence of the pose and inspires more emotive and narrative-driven work.

Learning Goals:

• Design a composition that is more than a standard portrait
• Include the gesture of the head and upper body to suggest a narrative
• Use tonal work to suggest form and capture light within a portrait
• Create studies of the portrait from different angles

Who is this course for: This course is for those that have begun to take the journey towards portraiture and wish to move their work in to a more structured, repeatable process that will enable them to move beyond the start in portrait drawing

How will I learn: Working through Tutor led demonstrations, discussions and explanations you will create your own work to develop your own portfolio of drawings

How will I be assessed: Your tutor will support you throughout

What shall I bring: All materials will be provided by the Tutor at a cost of £15 for the entire course

Next steps: progression may include ‘From drawing to painting – watercolour portraiture’, ‘Understanding colour theory and its use in painting practices’

If a learner decides to withdraw from a course before a course begins, the following charges should be made:

• 5 working days or more before course starts a full refund will be issued

Attendance is expected at each session to ensure that you get the most out of your learning experience and to minimise disruption for other learners. Please advise the venue/tutor of any absence you may have.
