Paint and Pause: Still Life Art

Friday 6th, 13th and 20th March 2026

10.00am to 1.00pm

Develop your observational skills by working from still life objects, using mindful art practices to encourage relaxation, focus, and a sense of calm while creating

Learning Goals: 

  • Use observation skills to produce at least 2 drawings from a study object
  • Create your drawings using at least 2 basic geometric shapes
  • Demonstrate the use of colour and contrast in a one final painting of still life
  • Self evaluate how creating art can help reduce stress and spark creativity

About this course: This course introduces still life art as a calming and creative practice. Starting with pencil and monotone sketches, learners will progress to painting, exploring colour, contrast, and composition. You’ll learn how to arrange your own objects for study, developing observational skills while enjoying mindful, relaxing sessions that promote focus and wellbeing

Who is this course for: This course, funded by UK government is for Hampshire residents aged 19+ who love being creative

Previous knowledge or experience: Previous art experience is useful but not essential

How will I learn: by demonstrations by tutor and exploratory methods through own creativity

How will I be assessed: tutor observation, feedback &, individual work

What shall I bring: Please bring pencils and other drawing materials you have for the first week then we will discuss materials for future weeks

Next steps: Further art and craft activities including free drop in sessions in your local library and other art courses and workshops through Learning in Libraries

This course, funded by Hampshire Achieves, is aimed at Hampshire residents aged 19+. Attendance is expected at each session to ensure that you get the most out of your learning experience and to minimise disruption for other learners. Please advise the venue/tutor of any absence you may have.
