This engaging short course introduces individuals to creative writing through hands-on
activities, reflective exercises, and genre exploration.
Learning Goals:
- Identify what makes a memorable character
- Create a visual outline of your story idea
- Summarise the three-part story arc (beginning, middle, end)
- List key genre expectations and emotional beats for your story
- Write a short scene featuring strong dialogue and internal voice
- Reflect on your writing voice and themes
- Identify at least 2 basic editing and revision tools
About the course: You will learn core writing techniques, develop memorable characters, map out a story idea, and gain the confidence to continue writing after the course ends. Learners can apply what they learn to many writing genres including romance, thriller, mystery/crime, memoir, medical, fantasy/sci fi.
Who is this course for: No matter where you are in your writing journey, this course will guide you from the very beginning
Previous knowledge or experience: None Required
How will I learn: Discussion, demonstration, writing exercises, and Q&A.
How will I be assessed: Through group discussion and review of your story outline/main character development.
What shall I bring: If possible, bring your preferred electronic device, such as laptop or tablet, as there will be writing exercises/tasks throughout the course. .
Next steps: This course will equip you with the tools to outline your story , enabling you to move on to more detailed writing workshops in the future
All other materials, tools, equipment and other resources will be provided by the tutor.
