Records of the Poor - On-site talk
Monday 22nd June 2026
6.00pm to 7.00pm
Location - Hampshire Record Office, Winchester
This talk looks at some examples of pre-1834 Poor Law Documents (Settlement Certificate and Overseers Accounts), Poor Law Union Records (Minute Books and Workhouse Records) and Hampshire County Asylum Records. It will look at what can be discovered about a poor person mentioned in the documents but also areas where useful information can be found about other people mentioned in them, an area often overlooked. It will finish with a post-1834 case study for a young lady whose existence seems to have been forgotten over time. After chatting with a grandson of her sister it was discovered that she appears to have not been mentioned in the family.
Presented by Julie Muirhead, who holds the Institute of Heraldic & Genealogical Studies (IHGS) Higher Certificate in Genealogy and is currently undertaking the IHGS Diploma in Genealogy. She is an AGRA Associate, professional genealogist and local historian with a particular interest in the poor of the parish of St Mary Bourne, Hampshire (the location for her One-Place Study).
