Sewing for Beginners

10.00am to 2.00pm
Learn how to read patterns, operate your sewing machine and identify stitches/functions.
Also, on this course you will sew different types of hem, seams and zips, experiment which is better for different types of projects and fabrics. You will learn the sewing jargon and techniques required for your individual project whilst being in a friendly, library setting, whilst connecting and learning with likeminded people.
Learning Goals:
- List at least 3 sewing terms and describe.
- Demonstrate the ability to use a sewing machine and identify stitches/functions.
- Demonstrate and practice further sewing techniques with seams, hems and zippers. At least one from each category
Who is this course for: This course, funded by UK government is for Hampshire residents aged 19+ who are complete beginners who would enjoy learning the basics and key fundamentals in sewing and alterations.
Previous knowledge or experience: None required
How will I learn: Discussion, demonstration, and independent sewing in class
How will I be assessed: Q&A and Sewn samples
What shall I bring: For the first session you will need to buy/bring: Sewing machine with a standard sewing foot that is suitable for your machine, bobbins and mains operated plug, Thread, Calico cut into squares for samples. Roughly a 6-inch square. These can be purchased from the tutor if necessary. 10-20 samples would be beneficial. Fabric snips or small fabric scissors. Pen and notepad
