Sewing for Sustainability Workshop

Fleet Eco Hub

Saturday 18th July 2026 

10.00am to 2.30pm

This workshop is designed to build participants’ confidence in using sewing as a practical tool for sustainable living. Learners will develop knowledge of ethical materials and how to source and repurpose fabrics from existing textiles. Learners will gain foundational hand-sewing skills and learn key repair techniques, enabling them to extend the life of garments or upcycle them for different purposes. Learners will practice the most common type of seams and seam finishes that are used within construction and repair of garments. Learners will also create a small tote bag using a recycled items of clothing

Learning Goals:

  • Describe the concept of sustainable sewing, including the environmental impact of fast fashion and the importance of repair and reuse.
  • Identify suitable reused, recycled, and ethical fabric sources, and recognise how existing garments can be repurposed.
  • Create a simple upcycled textile product (tote bag) using reclaimed fabric, following a pattern.
  • Identify further resources and community opportunities to support ongoing sustainable practice.

Who is this course for: This course, funded by UK government is for Hampshire residents aged 19+ who are beginners and would like to build their understanding of sustainability by embracing the use of sewing and alterations to extend the life of textile products. This learning will take place in a friendly community setting, where you can learn and connect with like-minded people and find out more about sustainability projects in the local area.

Previous knowledge or experience: How to operate a sewing machine

How will I learn: Discussion, demonstration and independent sewing in the workshop.

How will I be assessed: Q&A and sewn samples

What shall I bring: For the first session, Sewing machine, Pins, Needles, Thread, Fabric Scissors, Dressmakers Tape Measure, Bobbins, Items of Clothing to be recycled as a tote bag, Bias Binding, which when pressed with an iron is 1cm wide

Attendance is expected at each session to ensure that you get the most out of your learning experience and to minimise disruption for other learners. Please advise the venue/tutor of any absence you may have.
