Soft Pastels: A Journey into Colour and Texture

Friday 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th November 2025

10.00am to 1.00pm

In this course, you'll learn practical techniques to blend, layer, and build confident, expressive artwork with this versatile medium. Each week will have a different subject matter including landscapes, still life etc.

Learning Goals:

  • Make various marks with the basic soft pastel techniques
  • Demonstrate layering the soft pastels to create depth, texture and colour mixing
  • Create at least two soft pastel paintings using the creative process as a tool for self care and reflection
  • Describe how engaging in art can help focus attention and reduce stress

About the course: This course offers a chance to slow down, breathe, and explore the soothing world of soft pastels—a medium known for its rich colours, tactile quality, and expressive potential

Who is this course for: Anyone looking to develop their creative skills and improve their wellbeing

Previous knowledge or experience: None, this course is for beginners. Just lots of enthusiasm, willingness to learn and a desire to have fun.

How will I learn: This is a relaxing and friendly course with step-by-step demonstrations. You will be gently guided through different soft pastel drawing activities, starting at the basics

How will I be assessed: Through observation, questioning, discussion and peer/self evaluation

What shall I bring:

For a total fee of £6 the tutor will provide all the tools and materials for your use during the course or please bring the following

  • Soft Pastels in blocks (NOT oil)
  • Soft Pastel in pencil form
  • A4 pad or loose sheets of pastel paper (can be different colours) or cold pressed watercolour paper
  • Blending stump or Tortillon or Cotton buds
  • Sand paper
  • Rubber
  • Pencil HB
  • Apron
  • Latex gloves (optional, hands get messy with pastel powder)
    Masking Tape (optional)

Attendance is expected at each session to ensure that you get the most out of your learning experience and to minimise disruption for other learners. Please advise the venue/tutor of any absence you may have.
