Starting with Oil: A Beginner’s Journey

10.00am to 12.00pm

To develop a comprehensive understanding of the materials used in oil painting, including the complexities of their component parts. To complete works using both indirect (layered) and direct (alla prima) methods. To apply knowledge of colour theory, colour mixing, tone, and brush control to influence the final outcome of a painting. Engaging in painting can be a great way to relax and unwind.

Learning Goals:

  • Identify and use essential oil painting supplies, including brushes, paints, palettes, and canvases
  • Develop confidence of applying tone and colour within your oil painting
  • Describe the process of building a painting in layers, from underpainting to final details
  • Apply learned techniques and develop your confidence to complete a simple oil painting from start to finish
  • Describe how painting can positively impact your wellbeing

Who is this course for: Develop a deep understanding of oil painting materials and their components. Create artworks using both indirect and direct techniques. Use knowledge of colour theory, mixing, tone, and brush control to shape the final
painting. Painting can be a relaxing and enjoyable activity

Who is this course for: This course is perfect for beginners eager to explore the world of oil painting. It offers an in depth understanding of the medium, highlighting both its advantages and challenges. Learners will build a strong foundation in essential colour theory and the key elements that contribute to a successful painting

Previous knowledge or experience: None needed

How will I learn: Tutor led demonstrations and their own application

How will I be assessed: Learners will receive ongoing support from the Tutor

What shall I bring: Material cost of £15 to be handed to the Tutor at the beginning of the first session. Please wear appropriate clothing. If you have a desk easel, please feel free to bring one but it is not essential. Please bring a pen for the first session to complete some paperwork. Lastly, please bring a small lidded jar

Attendance is expected at each session to ensure that you get the most out of your learning experience and to minimise disruption for other learners. Please advise the venue/tutor of any absence you may have.
