Stepping Into School
Online course
Tuesday 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd June 2026
7.00pm to 8.30pm
This is an online course using Microsoft Teams. Participants will be required to use Microsoft Teams.
To help everyone get the most out of the Stepping into School course, please note that it focuses on general strategies for supporting children’s school readiness, rather than personalised guidance around complex family circumstances, specialist SEND processes, or individual mental health needs. If you feel you may need more tailored support, we can help signpost you to the right services. We may also contact you before the course to ensure it’s a good fit for your needs.
The aim of this course is to equip parents and carers with the knowledge, strategies, and practical tools needed to confidently support their child’s transition into school. Through a combination of discussion, modelling, and hands on activities, the course will help families understand key expectations of school life, strengthen home–school partnerships, and enhance children’s readiness for learning, independence, and wellbeing.
Learning Goals:
- Identify at least two specific areas in which your child may need additional support (e.g., communication, routines, fine motor skills).
- Describe at least two strategies that help develop your child’s independence and resilience in everyday routines at home and in preparation for school.
- Apply at least three practical school readiness strategies to support your child during their first year at school.
- Select and use three age appropriate games or activities that support communication, numeracy, and literacy at home.
- Explain at least two benefits of working in partnership with your child’s allocated school, including becoming familiar with the school site, attending visits, and supporting your child with the journey and transition.
About the course: This course supports parents and carers in preparing their child for starting school within the next year. The course links directly to Hampshire County Council’s Ready Steady School document and Best Start in Life: Starting Reception Information, ensuring all guidance aligns with local expectations for a positive and successful transition into Reception.
