Survey of the town and manor of Basingstoke, 1762
The survey consists of 8 maps which cover the town centre, the six Common Fields (Chapel Field, Hackwood Field, Hatch Field, North Field, Salisbury Field, Winchester Field) and Basingstoke Down, detailing Basingstoke as Jane Austen would have known it in her childhood.
The maps of the common fields show many field strips still in place from the medieval period, providing a unique insight into landholding in Basingstoke over many centuries, just a few years prior to the enclosure of the common fields in 1788. The maps are annotated with references of those properties owned by the Duke of Bolton; other properties record owner's names (where known). Also included is the reference book listing the tenants of the Duke's properties.
