Saturday 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th October 2026
10.00am to 1.00pm
This practical, step-by-step course introduces students to the process of creating a portrait in oils, beginning with the essential skills of observation, proportion and tonal drawing in charcoal. Building on these foundations, students will learn to mix convincing skin tones, understand colour relationships and develop a finished oil portrait with confidence.
Learning Goals:
- Accurately draw the proportions and placement of facial features in a portrait using observational techniques.
- Identify and render a range of tonal values in charcoal to create the illusion of three-dimensional form.
- Mix and apply a range of realistic skin tones using a limited oil colour palette.
- Complete an oil portrait that demonstrates effective use of proportion, tone, colour and paint handling techniques.
