This course uses sewing and textile activities to support health and wellbeing. In a friendly and supportive environment, learners will take part in creative activities that promote relaxation, reduce stress and build confidence. While developing sewing skills such as appliqué, embroidery and machine sewing, learners will create personal projects that encourage a sense of achievement.
Learning Goals:
- Demonstrate the ability to safely use a sewing machine and identify different stitch types.
- Use a range of haberdashery and recycled fabrics creatively in your own textile piece.
- Explain and apply the process of appliqué using bondaweb.
- Identify simple strategies to manage stress and support self-care through creative practice.
Who is this course for: This course, funded by UK government, is for Hampshire residents aged 19+ who are looking to improve their health and wellbeing through sewing and textile crafts. Open to all abilities, from beginners to experienced sewers, it provides a relaxed and creative space to reduce stress, boost confidence and improve mood.
Please note: eligibility criteria apply and will be checked upon enrolment.
Course purpose: To improve health and wellbeing
Previous knowledge or experience: None required.
How will I learn: A mixture of demonstrations, discussions and individual work.
How will I be assessed: Tutor observation, samples and final piece. Personal reflection on wellbeing, progress and learning
What shall I bring: For the first session you will need to buy/bring: All materials will be provided (including sewing machines) Additional (optional) materials will be available to purchase directly from the tutor. You may wish to bring your own materials too. This will be discussed on week 1
Next steps: Learners are encouraged to continue creative practice beyond the course to support their long-term wellbeing. Further workshops and opportunities are available through Hampshire Achieves. This course, funded by Hampshire Achieves, is aimed at Hampshire residents aged 19+. Attendance is expected at each session to ensure that you get the most out of your learning experience and to minimise disruption for other learners. Please advise the venue/tutor of any absence you may have.
